A fellow member of the Boys Club recommended this podcast in the general chat the other day. If you know me, you'll understand that whenever Vitalik speaks, I make sure to listen, especially when it's a 3-hour episode of "The Seen and The Unseen," where they discuss "rethinking everything in the world." You can imagine how much is covered in a three-hour podcast with such a concise thinker.
During this episode, Vitalik made a noteworthy point about decentralization in the context of building and governing a blockchain. He said, "Decentralization is not about having zero leaders; it's about having many leaders." He possesses a unique ability to make statements that are not only profoundly true but also often overlooked.
Common misconceptions: Proper decentralized systems don’t have to be flat organizations with zero hierarchy.
In the world of cryptocurrency, one main quest is to create true ownership of assets and censorship-resistant systems, which necessitates a decentralized approach. Additionally, many people advocate for decentralization due to their aversion to hierarchies. However, rather than merely flattening the pyramid a bit, decentralized systems are often transformed into completely flat networks with no organization. That's severe overcompensation. Decentralization is also often associated with chaos, a lack of accountability, and a loss of control (in certain phrasing this intended). These perceptions can indeed be accurate in suboptimal decentralized networks where groups claim to form decentralized communities, but in reality, they consist of random individuals linked together by a governance token held by one of their wallets.
Vitalik argues for a form of decentralization that involves many self-reliant teams with natural leaders consistently emerging. A network without leaders is impractical, but a network of individuals collectively empowered by numerous leaders offers tremendous growth potential. But these misconceptions about decentralization are not entirely wrong, as many so-called decentralized groups suffer from these shortcomings. However, as Vitalik outlines, in a well-designed system, we can overcome these challenges and progress.
Embracing chaos: How leadership can drive decentralized systems.
We appreciate chaos, but we prefer the organized version. A prime example of this is what Vitalik refers to as "illegible governance." It describes a system that is challenging to decipher and understand due to its complexity, but the presence of numerous leaders and blockchain tech helps organize this apparent chaos, ensuring efficient operation. Such a system is not only difficult to breach but also optimized for growth and efficiency, which are key elements for proper organizational governance. It fosters an environment where new projects can be initiated daily, and opportunities for emerging leaders to develop are constantly arising, with fewer concerns about bribery and other forms of coercion. This is beneficial not only for the organization but also for individuals. It eliminates stagnation and promotes growth and development, benefiting everyone involved.
This mindset is also a primary reason why some of the world's brightest minds choose to work within the Ethereum ecosystem. They are drawn to this type of environment because it enables them to thrive and flourish.
For instance, Vitalik mentions Danny Ryan, a member of the Ethereum Foundation. He recalls how Danny initially joined the group at a lower level but demonstrated high levels of effort and leadership. This provided him with opportunities to lead projects and further develop his skills. Today, he plays a vital role in the decentralized network of the Ethereum blockchain, facilitating decentralized groups and bringing ideas to life. Hearing such stories inspires me toward leadership and development, which highlights another significant advantage of a leader-dense decentralized network.
Decentralized impressions: how Vitaliks leadership inspires KEEZ’s future on the LUKSO Blockchain.
Lastly, I distinctly remember my strategic management professor emphasizing repeatedly that you can judge a good leader by how well their company functions after they leave. If the organization thrives or even surpasses its previous goals, it's a testament to effective leadership. Vitalik reinforces this idea by saying, "Ethereum can still thrive even if I (Vitalik) were to be hit by a bus tomorrow." This statement reflects not only his leadership abilities but also the system and culture he established. He created an ecosystem that attracts leaders, fosters idea generation, and instills a sense of endless possibilities—a truly powerful environment.
This power is so significant that it’s the ideal outcome of KEEZ. We have been working to create a very similar environment. One where individuals can enter at whatever skill level and, driven by the endless growth possibilities, reach heights they may have not been able to touch alone. Currently, in the state of our project, the opportunities are a bit limited simply based on our size and funding levels, but that does not mean the heart and effort aren’t there. We want to give people a voice. Give them a chance to become the leader they can be.
These ideas are to be facilitated by the LUKSO Blockchain. It being aimed at user experience, creatives, and interoperability could make it an even better suitor for this type of environment than its sister chain Ethereum. Fabian and the LUKSO team have worked tirelessly to provide the necessary building blocks to create a massively collaborative sandbox. Now, it's up to the leaders and builders to set a positive example and establish genuinely decentralized groups aimed at action. When Universal Profiles begin rolling out, we will truly begin to see the potential behind this chain, and KEEZ looks forward to assisting in creating a leader-driven decentralized environment surrounding it.
